ABOUT

Hello There!

Vanessa E. Howard author

I write fantasy and sci-fi for middle grade and young adult readers - and the savvy adults who love those genres. I'm currently drafting a light YA fantasy about a girl with superpowers – but only for one hour a day. It’s hard to be a hero in just sixty minutes.

I have published short fiction pieces in two issues of Spark Flash Fiction, and I have a piece coming soon from Havok Publishing. I also have a short story appearing in a fall anthology from Nightshade Publishing and several pieces in an anthology coming next year from Twenty Hills. Samples of my fiction can be found on my website under the Fiction tab or over on Instagram and Facebook.

AND you can download for FREE my fantasy novella “Nizana,” a woodland story of sprites and imps, loosely based on the interactions of Jesus, Judas, and Peter. Just click Subscribe or Sign Up.

I have been a newspaper reporter, public relations writer, college composition teacher, freelance writer, blogger, salesperson, traveler and homeschool teacher. I've sold both underwear and cookware, although not at the same time. My time as a journalist taught me a lot about both writing and human nature.

I am a devoted Christian and unabashedly in love with Jesus. I thrive on writing about spiritual matters, whether non-fiction devotional material, or allegorical fiction. All of my writing is underpinned by my faith, even if a spiritual element isn’t immediately obvious.

My husband Danny is an engineer, finance guy, and all-around handy man. He is equally comfortable researching stocks and bonds, wiring a house, or felling a tree. I hit the husband jackpot, because he's also a fabulous supporter, daddy and friend. God blessed us with four delightful children, aged from toddler to teen. Our oldest son loves Legend of Zelda and studying big numbers. Our first daughter is a nature lover who would adopt every stray in the county if she could. Our second daughter is an artistic and bubbly ray of sunshine. Our youngest son, who took us on the intense and beautiful journey of adoption, is all about superheroes and Nintendo characters.

We homeschool, which is a blessing and an adventure. Homeschooling has opened my eyes to rich children's literature and exciting ways of learning, and it’s changed how I view writing for young people - it's so much more than just entertaining. It's enriching their minds, their educations, and their spirits. Books and stories shape the very identities that children develop, so they need stories of tremendous quality.

Our family lives on two-and-a-half woodsy acres in Central Texas. We have one hound dog, two fluffy cats, and a couple of loud chickens.

  • Different people define clean in different ways. For me, it means while there might be violence and even death, it will not be graphic or gratuitous. There might be references to sex, particularly between married characters, but they will be tactful and never graphic. I won’t use profanity or glorify sin.

  • The short answer is yes! I’m a Christian and I’m a writer, so absolutely, yes. My faith will ALWAYS be the foundation of my writing. But I don’t want to limit God’s use of my words to certain genres or circles. I’m open to where God leads, whether to a Christian publisher, secular publisher, small press, or indie. I pray that my work can bless both secular and believing audiences.

  • Really, anyone who is drawn to my work. The young and the young at heart. But, if I have to pin it down, middle grade (about 8-13) and young adult (about 13-20)

  • Bluebell Mint Chocolate Chip. All other answers are incorrect.
